The New Mon State Party (NMSP) issued a statement on February 12, saying that the NMSP is opposed to the military coup because all power-grabs by force have inflicted serious losses to our country throughout history.
The NSMP added, “The public believe that their peaceful protests are in line with democracy and the Tatmadaw should avoid any violent crackdowns on the protestors. We call for peaceful resolution of the conflict between the Tatmadaw and the National League for Democracy (NLD) and we also call for the unconditional release of all detained leaders and solve the political problems by peaceful means.”
This Mon Party is not happy with the Mon Unity Party’s (MUP) surprising acceptance of the military’s SAC governing council, which has triggered a considerable backlash against the initial decision by civil society and the MUP grassroots membership. NSMP also called on the MUP to democratically hold discussions in the party and respect the result. In fact the MUP has agreed to an emergency CEC meeting to review the decision.
