Kachin Independence Army (KIA) attacked the 21st-mile gate in upper Mayan village at the entrance to Myitkyina of Kachin State, at around 5 am on June 30.

Since the February coup, the KIA have mounted a series of attacks on junta troops and bases in support of the CDM anti-coup movement and the campaign for a federal democracy.

“The KIA’s Batallion-11 carried out the attack. I don’t get detailed information on the ground yet” said Col Naw Bu, Information Officer of the KIO Central.

“I heard the sounds of heavy weapons and gunfire. The fighting took around 45 minutes. A police member died on the spot and one other injured. A civilian was killed in the fighting, said a local from Mayan village. The 21st-mile gate is closed after the fighting.
