Ethnic Kachin parties failed to stop NLD landslide in Kachin State

Many observers expected the KSPP to do well in the 2020 election against the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD).

The NLD however won in 51 of 70 constituencies in Kachin State.

The USDP secured 10 seats, the Kachin State People’s Party only four seats, the New Democracy Party (Kachin), two seats, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), one seat, the Lisu National Development Party (Delay Party), one seat and one independent candidate, according to the respective election sub-commission.

The NLD secured all seats in Myitkyina, Waingmaw, Mohnyin, Moegaung, Hpakant, Bhamaw and Shwegu Townships in Kachin State.

In addition, the NLD secured three each in Machanbaw, Putao, Sawlaw, Taning and Moemauk Townships and one each in Khaunglanphu, Naungmon and Chiphwe Townships.

But the NLD did not win any seats in Ingyanyan and Swanparabwan Townships where the Kachin State People’s Party, the USDP and the independent candidates secured the seats.

The NLD secured the seats for Bamar ethnic affairs minister, Shan ethnic affairs minister and Rawan ethnic affairs minister while Lisu National Development Party (Dulay Party) won the seat for Lisu ethnic affairs minister.

In the 2015 General Elections, the NLD won 47 of 70 constituencies in Kachin State.
