Kachin Charities Join Earthquake Relief

The Kachin Baptist Church (KBC) and Kachin civil society organisations (CSOs) and religious charities have raised 163 million kyats (MMK) to help the victims of the 28 March 2025 earthquake.

KBC has donated 150 million kyats (MMK) to help the earthquake victims. The Lift for Youths 3 group has donated 3 million MMK, and the Good Servant Charity Group (GSCG) 10 million MMK.

As well as donating money, the KBC  is also trying to provide food, shelter, and drinking water to around 200 people staying at the Jubilee compound and the Lower Myanmar Kachin Baptist Association compound in Mandalay City.

Hpauyawng Tu Mai, the KBC Secretary General said: “KBC’s social aid department will take care of the relief plans. KBC has already arranged to help those in need in Mandalay, Sagaing, Naypyidaw, and other areas.”

A GSCG official said that the group plans to work with young people involved in relief efforts in Mandalay to provide earthquake victims with food and small amounts of financial aid.

She said to KNG: “When we Kachin people faced hard times, folks from the southern regions of Myanmar stepped up to help us. Now that they're struggling, we want to give back and show them the same love.”

Lift for Youths will collaborate with trusted teams on the ground to send aid to earthquake victims.

MT25 Caring Team, another Kachin religious charity, plans to connect with religious organisations in Mandalay and Yangon and team members will travel to the disaster zones to deliver relief materials.

It is not just Kachin people in Kachin State who are contributing money to help earthquake victims. Kachin communities abroad are also donating part of their salaries, according to a Kachin man working in Malaysia.

He said: “We’re all fellow citizens of the same country. We shouldn’t let differences in ethnicity, language, or culture divide us. Instead, we should support each other and offer help. I believe the Lord will bless this act.”

A powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake hit Sagaing Region on 28 March 2025, causing widespread damage in major cities like Sagaing, Mandalay, and Naypyidaw, as well as many towns and villages. The earthquake destroyed homes, infrastructure, religious buildings, and historic monuments. The death toll is already in the thousands and is expected to rise.

The United States Geological Survey (USGS) has warned that the death toll from an earthquake of this magnitude could range from 10,000 to 100,000.

International rescue teams have now arrived in Myanmar, joining the ongoing search and rescue efforts in the capital Naypyidaw and the cities of Mandalay and Sagaing.
