Kachin State Election Sub-Commission is unable to compile the lists of voters in nearly 200 villages in Kachin State.
“The sub-commission has to take the population census first and picks up the eligible voters from the census for the compilation of the voters’ lists. These villages are located in the Ethnic Armed Organizations (EAOs)-controlled areas and exhibit lack of security” said U Tun Aung Khaing, the officer of the Kachin State Election Sub-Commission.
Daw Dwel Bu from Kachin State People’s Party (KSPP) is not happy with the performance of UEC.
“It is a big loss to ethnic parties in addition to other political parties. Some citizens lost their voting rights although according to the 2008 Constitution every citizen can cast their vote freely.
“The KSPP official argued that “we should discuss the construction of polling booths in all places where the people are living including inside EAO zones. The public and local parties will not be deprived of their rights if both sides reach a consensus,” she added.
In 2015, the election sub-commission was unable to compile the lists of voters in 215 villages.
There are nearly 1.1 million voters for the 2020 General Election in Kachin State. Since June 2019, the lists are compiled by the Kachin State Immigration Department, Township General Administration Department and the Kachin State Election Commission.
The lists of voters have been displayed since September 1.
