Over 10,000 people staged a protest against the military coup in Taunggyi in southern Shan State on the evening of February 7th.as demonstrations engulfed all parts of the country making it the biggest nationwide protests since the 2007 ‘Saffron revolution’.
The protestors chanted “Down with the military dictatorship, the Army Must Accept Election Results.! Free detained political leaders and political prisoners! Free State Counsellor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi !
One protestor said: “We don’t want the military dictatorship. Not only is the whole country of Myanmar but also the world against it.”
The people across the country are honking horns, pots and pans to show their opposition to the military coup. During Sunday protests spread to Mandalay Magwe, Myawaddy Pathein and even the capital Nay Pyi Taw.
“Anti-coup protests show every sign of gaining steam. On the one hand, given history, we can well expect the reaction to come,” author and historian Thant Myint-U wrote on Twitter. “On the other, Myanmar society today is entirely different from 1988 and even 2007. Anything is possible.”
