Taungup Township Court released four people including U Thaung Wai, vice-chair of the Arakan National Party (ANP) from Taungup Township in Arakan State, at the court hearing on April 26th said lawyer Daw Theingi Maung.
U Thaung Wai, Vice-Chair of the Arakan National Party (ANP), U Zeya Kyaw, Chair of the Township Development Affairs Committee and U San Ngwe, Ex-Chair of the Township Development Affairs Committee and philanthropist U Sithu Kyaw Zan, were all acquitted of terrorism charges.
The lawyer said: “The court decided that the state prosecutor filed the case against them only on the basis of suspicion. They were acquitted under Section 258 (i) of the Code of Criminal Procedure.”
Ma Hin Wai Wai Phyo, daughter of U Wai Thaung said: “I am very happy with the release of the accused including my father.”
The police arrested them for allegedly having a link to the Arakan Army (AA).
They were charged under Section 50 (a) and 52 (a) of the Anti-Terrorism Law. They faced the court proceedings at Taungup Township Court. The Taungup Township Police force arrested them in May, 2020.
