Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) strongly denounced the military coup and called for the immediate and unconditional release of the detained leaders, politicians and activists, according to a statement by the SNLD on February 3rd.
The SNLD emerged as leading ethnic party with 42 seats won in the November election that has just been overturned by the military coup.
In its statement the SNLD said it strongly condemns the military coup as this is a rejection of the country’s commitment to a democratic transition, and it goes against the peace process and trust building among the public. We call for resolving all problems on the table peacefully and politically.
The SNLD will firmly stand with the people on the election results in accord with the desires of the people. The SNLD affirmatively urges to recognize and accept the results earned through the correct and fair competition.
The SNLD issued this statement based on our aspiration for the union, the firmly-held democratic standards and the basic principle of solving political problems by political means.
