The Karen National Party (KNP) has set a policy of cooperating with other ethnic allies for the emergence of a federal state. The KNP’s motto for the 2020 General Election is: “Towards a genuine Federal Union.”
The 2008 military-drafted Constitution does not cover federal fundamental principles, said Mann Kyaw Nyein, General Secretary of the KNP on September 9. The KNP is a member of the UNA(United Nationalities Alliance).
A total of 13 candidates from the KNP will run for the seats in Ayeyawady Region, Bago Region and Hpasawng Township in Kayah State.
There are no women among the KNP’s candidates.
The 35 percent of candidates are youths, according to the KNP’s central executive committee.
The KNP was set up in 2014 with the support of the Karen people in the Ayeyawady Region. In the 2015 Election, 21 candidates from the KNP ran but failed to secure any seats.
The KNP is optimistic that nearly half of its candidates will secure the seats in the 2020 General Election.
Due to the spread of COVID-19, the KNP is unable to carry out the canvassing in the remote areas and the party also faces a shortage of funds.
Since its establishment, the KNP has had more than 10,000 members. Most of the members are from the Ayeyawady Region.
