The police arrested more than 23 people including one reporter and eight females on February 1st in Hakha of Chin State after a tar-gas attack on the anti-coup protestors with teargas.
Salai Sang Hnin Lyan, a leader of Chin human rights organization said: “We asked for the name lists of those detained at the police station yesterday night. The police did not give the names of detainees but said eight females and 15 males had been detained.
The head of Chin State Administration Council said most detainees would be released today. The police may detain one or two persons if the police want to investigate them. The police cracked down on the peaceful protestors with teargas, entered the houses to arrest people and seized motorbikes at the roadside.
Sang Hnin Lyan “The authorities should not carry out brutal crackdowns on the peaceful protestors with the use of forces. I think the reporter who covered the news should not be arrested. I would like to call on the army to stop making the arrests and carrying out brutal crackdowns on peaceful protestors.”
On February 27th, the police arrested three persons including the CEO of Hakha Times-News Agency. They were released on February 28th. Similarly, the police cracked down on peaceful protestors with teargas and arrested three persons in Falam of Chin State on February 27th.
The police have filed the case against them under Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code on March 1st and Section 505 (a) of the Penal Code is a non-cognizable offense and carries up to two years imprisonment and fine.
