The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) has strongly denounced the assassination of their candidate U Htike Zaw, who secured the seat for Kyaukme District Constituency-1 in Shan State.
At around 6.30 pm on November 21, two men arrived at U Htike Zaw’s house in Pintein village in Kyuakmae Township by motorbike. They fired shots and hit U Htike Zaw in the chest who died on the way to Kyaukme District Hospital.
The NLD’s CEC and all party members would like to express the sincere condolence for the loss of U Htike Zaw, and share in his family’s grief.
In addition, the Shan State NLD election committee issued a statement requesting people not to make gossip and erode trust in an investigation to uncover the truth about the case. The statement concludes “it is the time of building up a federal democratic Union by joining hands with ethnic peoples”.
There is widespread criticism and denunciation circulating among netizens and those in political circles over this killing.
U Htike Zaw who competed in Kyaukme District Upper House Constituency-1 representing the NLD, won over the candidate from the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD) with over 50 votes. The SNLD secured the remaining two seats in the Kyaukme District.
