“The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) should recognize the aspirations of ethnic parties and be broad-minded and flexible on the talks with ethnic parties, said Joint-Chair of the Chin National League for Democracy (CNLD) Pu No Htan Kat.
CNLD”s Pu No Htan Kat considers “The problem can be solved if the NLD recognizes that feelings of ethnics over 70 years are sensitive issues.”
The NLD delegation led by Dr. Aung Moe Nyo met with the ethnic parties in Kachin State on January 1st. But the meetings with the parties in Mon and Kayah States never materialized because the NLD team refused to consider an alternative venue to the local NLD office. This resulted in the two meetings being cancelled. The NLD has started its meetings with ethnic parties since January 1st
“The NLD delegation members themselves should make their own decisions, rather than the CEC’s decision. The problem can be solved if they adopt a more relaxed approach. Our ethnic parties have different views, as we have own feelings and our own history of doing politics. The NLD is not even aware of that point. Domineering approach will be totally wrong,” he continued.
Making an approach to the party will be the best. The current pattern may lead to disunity between the elected candidates and their parties. The parties need to choose the persons who will attend the meeting, he added. Many ethnic parties have also informed the NLD delegation that they should hold talks not only with the elected candidates, but also with the persons chosen by the respective parties.
The ruling National League for Democracy sent an open letter to 48 ethnic parties in States to hold talks on the future federal union after the 2020 General Elections. Since January 1st, the NLD has started its meetings with ethnic parties.
The CNLD secured only one seat in the 2020 General Elections in Chin State. The NLD delegation did succeed in meeting the Pa-O National Organization (PNO) and the Ta aung (Palaung) National Party (TNP) in Taunggyi of Shan State on January 15th.
