The Mon Unity Party (MUP) welcomes the NLD’s letter sent to the ethnic parties for active cooperation in building up a federal democratic Union.

In the letter to the ethnic parties, the NLD said it was aware that the ethnic parties actively participated in the recent November 8 Election. Some ethnic parties got satisfactory results.

The NLD would make constant efforts for the emergence of a democratic federal Union. The NLD would pay attention to the ethnics, as it has the same objective with the ethnic parties.

The NLD sent the letters dated November 12 with the title “Union Affairs for the future of Myanmar”, to 48 ethnic parties...

The MUP secured 12 seats in the election—two for the lower house, three for the upper house, six for Mon State parliament and one for ethnic affairs minister, according to the statement by the UEC doing far better than in the  2015 General Election.

Ma Chaw Su Kyi, a local from Mawlamyine Township said: “It is a very suitable invitation. Ethnic parties partly serve the interests of the national State. We will see more regional development if we engage in a collective manner. This can help to promote the living standards and culture of ethnic people.”

Other ethnic parties have been more cautious about the NLD letter and have stressed their willingness to cooperate with the NLD depends on the government making greater efforts at forging a federal union based on ethnic rights and a peace settlement.

So far there is no indication that NLD will utilize their landslide election victory in order to offer any new path to achieve in the next 5 years what they failed to accomplish in the last 5 years.
