Five central executive committee members of the Mon Unity Party (MUP)
and some township-level party members have official resigned in
protest over cooperation with SAC on March 24th, according to their
posts on social media.
This came as a response after the majority of MUP ‘s CEC (executive
committee) accepted the military ‘s offers of positions inside the
State Administration Council. The acceptance of this offer veers from
the party’s policy which is opposed to dictatorship.
A member of MUP’s CEC Dr. Banyar Aung Moe now becomes a member of the
State Administration Council and the MUP’s Joint-Secretary Naing
Layitama, is a member of the Mon State Administration Council.
However the resignation of highly-respected Dr. Aung Naing Oo, a
former deputy speaker of the Mon State Parliament from the central
executive and supported by civil society, deals a blow to MUP
credibility, according to CSOs. However, he remains an MUP member of
Chaungsone Township.
Currently, the MUP is formed with 61 central executive members and 140
central committee members. The MUP is chaired by former New Mon State
Party’s CEC member Naing Tin Aung.
In 2019, the MUP is formed with some leaders from the Mon National
Party, the All Mon State Democracy Party and Mon CSOs.
