Kayan National Party (KNP) will make preparations for the next election after it lost nearly all the seats they contested in the 2020 General Election, said Khun Bi Htoo, Chair of the KNP.

Khun Bi Htoo blamed their defeat on the “influence of famous people on Kayan people, the lack of clear-cut political policies, and the disruption caused by the COVID-19 pandemic period..

The KNP ran for 10 constituencies but secured only one seat for Karen Ethnic Affairs Minister in Shan State.

“Public service and getting elected calls for better policy and platforms. We will make necessary preparations. To sum up the first is to ensure better policy and party. The second the party needs to organize people with clear-cut political policies. The third -the party needs to make an alliance with other ethnic parties at the national level in order to compete in the election and to form the government,” Khun Bi Htoo added.

In the 2010 General Elections, the KNP secured two seats in Phalkhone Constituency in the southern Shan State. But in the 2015 General Elections, it lost all seats in Phalkhone Township Constituency. The KNP did not compete in the 2017 By-Elections.

On April 26th, 2010, the KNP applied to the UEC. The UEC allowed the KNP to set up the party on May 4 in the same year. The KNP got the nod for registration on May 20, 2010.
