The Chin National League for Democracy (CNLD) is ready to cooperate with the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) on the creation of a democratic federal union based on the Panglong Treaty, said Salai Kyal Obi, Secretary of the CNLD.

“The NLD sent a letter to us in the hope that ethnic parties would cooperate in building up a democratic federal system. The CNLD has replied to the NLD saying that the CNLD is ready to join hands in building up a federal democracy which is our policy based on national equality and self-determination based on the Panglong Treaty,” he added.

The NLD hopes that ethnic parties will actively cooperate in the democratic federal union to be implemented by the NLD. In the recent days, the ruling NLD has chosen Dr. Aung Moe Nyo, Daw Nan Khin Htwe Myint and U In Htone Khar Naw Sam to lead the talks with ethnic parties on democratic federal union.

“Appointing three NLD representatives is constructive for practical coordination. I think it is a step-by-step process. The CNLD is ready to hold talks,” he continued.

The CNLD, a merger of three Chin political parties, competed in 57 constituencies in the 2020 General Elections in Sagaing Region, Magway Region, Arakan State and Chin State. But the CNLD secured only one seat.
