In Arakan State, the number of students has dropped by over 150,000 in school enrollment for the 2021-2022 academic year starting on June 1st.

In the previous 2019-2020 Academic Year, the school enrollment amounted to 539,503. According to the Office of the Arakan State Education Officer, only just over 300,000 students have returned to school.

This conforms to the nationwide pattern which according to the Myanmar Teachers' Federation only about 10 percent of Myanmar's roughly 9 million students enrolled for the 2021-22 school year, which got underway on June 1.

Another indication of this embarrassing failure of the military regime to establish some semblance of governance is the low urn out of teachers with more than half of the 400,000 teachers remaining on strike against military rule.

The number of students in Thandwe District has dropped to 39,141 this academic year from 60,507 in 2019-2020 Academic Year.

Thandwe, Gwa and Taungup Townships in Thandwe District in Arakan State saw anti-coup protests.

The drop in the number of school enrollment is linked to the no-back-to-school campaigns.
