Due to fighting between the Karenni People’s Defense Force (KPDF) and the junta troops, the people in Demawso Township of Kayah State are fleeing to safer places.
IDPs are in need of medicine, especially sick children under five.
“Some children are suffering from serious conditions including asthma, fever and viral gastroenteritis (stomach flu). There is an acute need for oral rehydration salt packets and thermometers,” a local said.
Nearly 2,000 people from more than 20 villages in Demawso Township are taking shelter at suitable places, as there is no room in IDP camps. Most of the IDPs are the elderly and children under 10.
The IDPs had to flee in a hurry and were not able to bring along the medicine they needed.
Since May 21st fighting broke out between the KPDF and the military council in Loikaw and Demawso Townships. Some religious buildings and houses were damaged by heavy shelling by the army. The fighting has displaced more than 50,000 people there.
