No students showed up for the reopening of Hakha University in Chin State on May 5th.
Dr. Lian Za Khup, Pro-Rector of the Hakha University said: “The academic affairs department is tasked with the enrollment of students. Up till now, no one attends classes. Some students come to the campus, but they do not attend classes even though teachers are ready to teach them.”
However, the claim that teachers are “ready to teach them” is widely disputed. A female student from Hakha University said: “Most of the teachers have joined the Civil Disobedience Movement (CDM). Many students have risked their lives. We are absent from the class as we don’t want to pursue an education under the government which has violently seized power.”
Since May 5th the military council has reopened the final year courses in universities, colleges and degree colleges under the Higher Education Department of the Ministry of Health, for vocational training schools and technical institutes nationwide.
Most university students across the country are still staging protests, and defying the coup. In addition, most of the teachers are participating in the CDM.
The university has 112 students from different majors in the master, final year and second-year honour classes.
