The newly-formed NUG covers ethnics Kachin, Karen, Karenni, Mon, Chin and Ta aung (Palung). But it doesn’t include all ethnics. The National Unity Government (NUG) will extend its cabinet with the inclusion of all ethnics, said the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH).
The CRPH declared the formation of Interim National Unity Government on April 16th.
The NUG emerged with the approval of the CRPH and through the discussions and coordination between the National Unity Consultative Council.
The NUG will carry out the practical implementation of the road map included in the Federal Democracy Charter. On behalf of the Union Parliament, the CRPH will serve as legislative pillar and the NUG as the executive pillar. The judiciary pillar will be formed, the CRPH said.
In addition, the Region and State governments will be formed in accord with the will of the people in the relevant regions and states and approved by the committee representing the region and state parliaments.
Appointments include:
Mahn Win Khaing Than, an ethnic Karen and former House Speaker under the NLD government, is the country’s prime minister, while President U Win Myint and State Counselor Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, who were ousted by the coup and have been detained since February, retain their positions.
Vice president is lawyer Duwa Lashi La, president of the Kachin National Consultative Assembly, politically the most authoritative body in Kachin State.
Dr. Sasa, a member of the CRPH and Myanmar’s Special Envoy to the United Nations, has been appointed the Minister for International Cooperation.
CRPH spokesperson Yee Mon, also known as Maung Tin Thit, has been named the defence minister with his deputies revealed as Khin Ma Ma Myo, the founder of the Myanmar Institute for Peace and Security Studies, and Nai Kao Rot, an ethnic Mon politician.

At 26 years old, Ei Thinzar Maung is the youngest interim cabinet member. She is a well-known protest leader in the anti-coup resistance movement and a former member of the Democratic Party for a New Society.
The CRPH consists mainly of parliamentarians from the National League for Democracy (NLD) who were elected in Myanmar’s 2020 general election but were unable to take their seats in the legislature due to the February 1 military coup.
The NUG includes a president, state counsellor, vice president, prime minister and 11 ministers for 12 ministries. There are also 12 deputy ministers appointed by the CRPH. Of the 26 total cabinet members, 13 belong to ethnic nationalities, and eight are women.
With the authority bestowed by the people’s mandate resultant of the all parties’ democratic election held in 2020, the CRPH formed the NUG, in accordance with Federal Democratic Charter published on 31st March.
