Dr. Aung Naing Oo, a leading member of the central executive committee of the Mon Unity Party (MUP)has resigned in disgust over the MUP majority executive decision to accept the military regime’s invitation to join their SAC (State Administrative Council).
There is widespread criticism among the voters and observers as the MUP accepted an offer to take post in SAC formed by the army, and is now viewed as betraying the democratic principles of the MUP that aspires for a democratic federal union.
The vast majority of all ethnic leaders, parties and EAOs have strongly agreed to treat the SAC as part of an illegal regime. And to support the nationwide CDM (Civil Disobedience Movement).
Dr. Aung Naing Oo who played an important role in the last Mon State parliament posted on Facebook “Democratic norms and values should not sway and collapse for any reason. The public cannot trust those who commit injustice. I have said what has to be said. I will continue doing the right thing. I shall be decisive at the right time.”
He served as the deputy speaker of Mon State Parliament in the previous tenure of parliament. He won the elections in 2010, 2015 and 2020 consecutively. The MUP can ill-afford to lose a senior member of his stature and credibility.
BNI had earlier reported that Dr. Aung Naing Oo had declared.” the key point was that party principles were being sacrificed by CEC members willing to accept the military coup and the party’s basic principle shall not encourage dictatorship.”
