Chin National League for Democracy (CNLD) issued a five-point statement on January, 25th, demanding a free and fair election in the future based on democratic norms.
Salai Shein Tun, Secretary of the CNLD said: “The main purpose of this statement is that the civilian governments have taken office twice. There are always disputes with political parties about the compilation of voter lists.
At this crucial juncture, we are concerned about the emergence of undesirable political problems due to the ambiguous matters over the election results. In its statement, the CNLD said “this is the time our country is working towards peace through national reconciliation, placing emphasis on national unity based on the spirit of the union. That is why we issued this statement in order to hold a free and fair election based on democratic norms with transparency, accountability and responsibility among the public in the future.”
The CNLD Secretary continued “We want the compilation of voter lists to be on the right path. Which data is deployed for the compilation of voter lists is crucial. In the 2020 General Elections, the compilation of voter lists is based on the household census of the Immigration Department. It is very important not only for the election period but also for the future.”
Although the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) won a landslide victory in the recent election, the Union Solidarity and Development Party called for a re-run of election in cooperation with the Union Election Commission (UEC) and the Tatmadaw.
However most ethnic parties have not supported the USPD military-backed campaign to discredit the 2020 election. Ethnic parties while pushing for greater rights within a federal union.While sometimes critical of the NLD, but they remain far more deeply opposed to militarism, the USPD party and any erosion of civilian democracy...
In the 2020 General Elections in Chin State, the NLD secured 36 seats and the Zomi Congress for Democracy (ZCD), two seats and the CNLD, one seat.
