Many Shan-ni ethics were not included in the online voters’ lists in Sagaing Region part of a distressing pattern of widespread errors spanning several ethnic states, that UEC officials have attributed to software computer errors.

With less than a month to go to the 2020 election a great many voters cannot find their names on lists. U Tun Myint, a local from Banmauk Township said: “I did not see my name via online. I went to the ward office to check my name. It is difficult to check the lists due to an internet connection.”

The Shan-ni missing from the voter’s lists are living in the following townships: Banmauk, Mawlike, Phaungpyin, Homaline, Khamti and Pinlaebu.UEC managed to make corrections to the missing lists on the evening of October 9.

U Tin Oo, Chair of Sagaing Region Election Sub-Commission said: “The problem is due to software errors. Not only our region but also other regions and states face similar problems. The sub-commission has to give the CDs to the UEC. I think the error occurred when the lists were compiled. The UEC directly releases the online voters’ lists sent by the regions and states.”

U Tin Oo, Chair of the Election Sub-Commission said: “The voters’ lists can be checked at the ward election sub-commission office if the people are unable to check their names via online. The online system aims to ensure the convenience of the voters in the remote townships and stay-at-home townships due to the spread of COVID-19.”

The voters can check their names via online since October 1.
