Strong competition is expected in Kachin State’s Myitkyina District between candidates from 15 political parties and four independent candidates registered to run for the seats, according to Myitkyina District Election Sub-Commission.

The 15 contesting parties are the National Unity Party, Shan Nationalities Democratic Party, the United Democratic Party, Union Solidarity and Development Party,  Kachin State People’s Party, the National League for Democracy, Tai-Leng (Shan-ni) Nationalities Development Party, Shan Nationalities League for Democracy, Kachin National Congress Party, Lisu National Development Party (Dulay Party), Lawwaw National Unity and Development Party, New Democracy Party (Kachin), the Union Betterment Party, Naga National Party and the Public Contribute Students Democracy Party.

The four independent candidates are: U Zaw Zaw Htet, Daw Mayan Garsai Khaung, U Yaw Nar and U Zaung Khaung.

There are 350,170 eligible voters in Myitkyina, Waingmaw, Tanaing, Chiphwe, Sawlaw and Ingyanyan Townships in Myitkyina District in the 2020 General Election.

The number of eligible voters has increased by nearly 60,000, compared to over 290,000 in the 2015 General Elections, according to Myitkyina District Election Sub-Commission.

A total of 484 candidates have registered to run for the seats in Kachin State. Only 480 qualified candidates will compete in the upcoming election as two candidates have revoked their applications and two others have been rejected. 

There are nearly 1.1 million voters in Kachin State, said U Tun Aung Khaing, the officer of the Kachin State Election Sub-Commission.
