A plan is under way to issue voter certificates to the people who have no NRC cards in Shan State, said U Htin Kyaw, Chair of the Shan State Election Sub-Commission.

More than 700,000 voters included in the lists in Shan State, have no National Registration Cards. The election sub-commission has pushed the Immigration Department to issue the NRC cards to them before the election.

“They will be allowed to cast their ballots with various ID: student ID cards, driving licenses, staff ID cards, Red Cross ID or auxiliary fire brigade ID cards if the Immigration Department is unable to issue the NRC cards in time.”

U Htin Kyaw added “Otherwise the final option is the election sub-commission will issue voter certificates to enable them to cast their votes. The voters shall only use the certificates issued by the election sub-commission at the polling stations to cast their votes and not for any other purpose and after voting, these certificates will become void.”
