Views of Chin political parties and Chin CSO on the formation of NUG

Salai Benezer (KMG)

The Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) formed the parallel National Unity Government (NUG) on April 16th. The following is the views of Chin political parties and Chin Civil Societies Organizations (CSOs) on the formation of the NUG.

Salai Ceubikthawng, Secretary of the Chin National League for Democracy

The first point is the inclusive role of ethnics in the newly-formed NUG is high. The NUG has assigned ethnics as the heads of the State. I think it is very constructive. The second point is that currently what the public is longing for is the civilian government. We are to welcome the implementation of the one the public wants. As I frequently said before, to sum up, the election is free and fair to a greater extent although the 2020 General Elections had some frauds. That’s why, anyone needs to recognize and respect the 2020 election results. As even the opposition ethic party has the same view, the NLD has a duty to form the government according to the 2020 election results. The NLD needs to perform its work dutifully as the public have assigned duties to the NLD. We will see whether the NLD can perform its work practically. In my view, till now, it is the right path that should be done.

Ko Lyan Taung, Chin Mountain Resources Watch Group

I welcome and support the NUG. Our burning desire is to make the NUG strong. I will not criticize the NUG before it becomes strong even if I have some critics.  I am awaiting the situation even if their weak points are kept in our mind.  We are ready to follow the NUG’s directive or leadership. The public have expressed their disagreements and are dutiful. As it is a political problem, we need a political path to solve the problem and the public’s disagreement. The path will be paved by the Committee Representing Pyidaungsu Hluttaw (CRPH) and the NUG. In my view, the CRPH has a responsibility to implement the public’s desire.

Ko GS Mang, Director of Area Peace and Development Forward

I think the emergence of this National Unity Government is a suitable way to respond to the current political situation. We support, welcome and encourage the NUG.  At this crucial time, the people-elected government is required. The NUG emerges due to the necessity. I hope the NUG can lead the efforts to terminate the military dictatorship.  The Defence Ministry has been formed. We have the defence minister and deputy ministers. I want the NUG to continue doing more to work on how to form Tatmadaw, how to form the federal army, how to persuade the EAOs to what extent.

Ko Htar Taung (Chin MATA)

I welcome the emergence of the NUG. The public have already supported it and are dutiful. The NUG on its part has a responsibility. It is an important part of the NUG. The NUG needs to have clear-cut policies on how it formulates the democracy the people want and to what extent the public will get involved. At the same time, the NUG needs to carefully deal with the matters pertaining to the EAOs and ethnics.
