A plan by the junta-appointed Union Election Commission (UEC) to revoke the NLD's party registration and file high treason charges against the party’s leaders, is under active consideration said U Thein Soe, Chair of the UEC, at a meeting with some political parties.

“The UEC will continue doing what it should do and checking voter lists is going to be completed soon,” he added.

The UEC met several political parties at its office in Nay Pyi Taw on May 21st however nearly all anti-coup parties refused the UEC invitation including; the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), the Arakan National Party (ANP), the Arakan League for Democracy (ALD) and the Chin National League for Democracy (CNLD) and many  others did not attend.

The UEC chair requested the officials of the political parties to send the letters on electoral frauds they experienced in the 2020 General Elections. The move aims to put these letters in the report to be sent to the State Administration Council (SAC). Chin National League for Democracy (CNLD) did not attend.

The UEC said the mass inclusion of people in the voter lists without the NRC cards, and the repeated inclusion of people for two or three times with a single ID cards, were found out when we conducted checks on voter lists. However, no independent review has been done on these claims which have been dismissed by all the international election observer bodies who considered the 2020 election as free and credible.

Although the NLD won a landslide victory in the 2020 General Elections with over 80 per cent, the army seized power on February 1st.
