A candidate from the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) has filed a surprise election challenge to the victory of Dr. Aung Naing Oo of the Mon Unity Party (MUP) calling on the UEC to overturn the result.

The electoral objection was filed by U Min Kyaw from the NLD against Dr. Aung Naing Oo who secured election victories for three times in a row.

Dr. Aung Naing Oo from the Mon Unity Party (MUP) won Chaungsone Township Constituency-1 for Mon State Parliament in the 2020 General Elections. He served as the deputy speaker of the second Mon State Parliament.

The elected parliamentarian responded “I have reported it to the MUP’s CEC committee. The CEC will provide necessary assistance to fight the case and the Yarmanya lawyer network will also extend a helping hand to me.  I do not believe I am at fault and will do my best to refute the objection.” The UEC will hear the case on February 3rd.

Dr. Aung Naing Oo defeated U Min Kyaw Lwin the NLD candidate who got around 14,000 votes with a tally over 15,000 votes.

The MNA was unable to contact U Min Kyaw Lwin and the Mon State NLD to seek the comment on why they had filed an objection to the UEC.
