UEC announces skipped constituencies in coming October

Union Election Commission (UEC)will announce the nationwide list of skipped constituencies where the 2020 General Elections cannot be held in coming October, U Myint Naing, a member of the Union Election Commission reported to a press conference at the UEC’s office in Nay Pyi Taw on September 2nd.

In the 2015 General Elections, the UEC was unable to hold the elections in 211 village-tracts and 11 townships of Kachin State, 94 village-tracts and seven townships of Kayin State, 41 village-tracts in two townships of Bago Region, one village-tracts in one township of Mon State and 106 village-tracts in 10 townships of Shan State, according to the UEC’s report.

Due to the lack of peace and security, the election could not be held in the above-mentioned constituencies.

He added that “Some skipped constituencies in Kachin State in 2015 have now improved stability. The commission has compiled the new list of voters for these areas where the election is likely to be held in 2020.”

The election is unlikely to be held in the northern Arakan State and Paletwa Township in Chin State due to the lack of regional stability caused by the armed conflicts between the Tatmadaw and the Arakan Army (AA).

The UEC will hold the 2020 General Election for 330 lower house parliamentary seats, 168 upper house parliamentary seats, 644 region and state parliamentary seats and 29 ethnic affairs minister posts.
