Two ministers from the Kachin State government and some female candidates have been released after being detained by the army, said U Sai Kyaw Thu, the executive of the Kachin State National League for Democracy (NLD) said on the morning of January 2.  

“I have heard that the Shan ethnic affairs minister and Rawan ethnic affairs minister are released. But I have not got any phone contact with them. I don’t exactly know the chief minister and ministers are being detained. They have been taken from their homes since over 4 am on February 1. Some detainees who have to take medicine had to go back home to bring medicine. This is the latest news,” he added.

The authorities have detained the township chairs and secretaries from the NLD in 18 townships of Kachin State. On the evening of February 1st, some female candidates arrived back at their homes, he added.

Two candidates from Mohnyin Township Constituency-1 and 2 and Ma Zarchi Myint from Bhamo Township Constituency-2 and Daw Thiri from Moegaung Township Constituency-2 have been released.

Daw Zae Chi Myint, a candidate from Bhamo Township said: “There is no interrogation. The Kachin State parliament speaker U Tun Tin and MP U Zaw Tin were detained along with us. They remain in detention. Only two detainees are released.

In Bhamo District, the authorities detained 11 people including the candidates, township chair and the information officer. Information officer Ma Wah Wah Aung and Daw Zarchi Myint from Bhamo Township Constituency-2 have been released.

According to the latest news, U Thein Han, chair of Phakant Township NLD has arrived back at his home.
