The first regular session of the third parliament to be attended by the newly-elected candidates is scheduled to take place in the first week of February 2021, said U T Khun Myat, Sitting Speaker of the Union Parliament.
A coordination meeting between the organization committee and the work committee to hold the regular sessions was held in Nay Pyi Taw on 7 December.
According to the 2020 General Election results: the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) tops the list of MPs with 258 lower house parliamentary seats and 138 upper house parliamentary seats.
The NLD is followed by the opposition Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) with 26 seats for the lower house parliament and seven for the upper house.
Ethnic parties secured 31 seats for the lower house and 16 for the upper house and a quarter of seats are reserved for the army.
According to the 2008 Constitution, the sessions of parliaments shall be called within 90 days after the election. At the session of the third Union Parliament, the new president, vice-presidents, the speakers of the lower house and upper houses will be selected.
The term of the second parliament shall end on January 31 the next year.
