The formation of the Mro Ethnic Party is aimed at bringing about the development of the Mro ethnic minority, one of the Arakan ethnic groups.

The party has four objectives:

(1) uphold our Three Main National Causes (non-disintegration of the union, non-disintegration of solidarity and perpetuation of sovereignty)

(2) cooperation with the government to ensure the perpetuation of the state of Myanmar and pursue the peaceful and modern development of the country in accord with the 2008 Constitution.

(3) conserve Mro’s literature, culture and tradition and unity and

(4) enabling other ethnics to know the literature and culture of Mro.

The party is weak compared with the local Arakan parties. The party will compete in three constituencies in the Arakan State. The party’s election motto is: “Adore the State, Respect the public and Conserve the culture.”

The party’s adherence to the 2008 constitution and their pledge to uphold our Three Main National Causes separates them from most ethnic parties that seek to reform the military-drafted 2008 constitution that is viewed as a major obstacle to the creation of a federal state.

U Min Aung, Secretary of Mro Ethnic Party said: “As an election pledge, the party will carry out the regional development tasks in Arakan State which lags behind in development in cooperation with other political parties.”

The party did not secure any seat in the 2015 General Election though the party ran for three seats. The party is unable to do canvassing due to the stay-at-home period in Arakan State. The party will have a hard struggle to take any seats from other Arakanese parties.
