NLD confirms new government to be formed with Daw Aung San Suu Kyi’s tenure as State Counselor to continue for a second term

Allegations from both the military and its proxy Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) that NLD’s victory was marred by mass fraud, were rebuffed by Dr. Zaw Myint Maung, Vice-Chair of the NLD told a press conference on January 24th .

In response to those allegations Dr. Zaw Myint Maung said “We have nothing to say to them [the military and USDP].” It is our duty, as the winning party, to convene the newly elected Parliament in time in accordance with the law.”

The NLD is focusing on convening the new national Parliament successfully on Feb. 1, and the state and regional legislatures on Feb. 9 as its first priorities after the election.

Speculation about whether NLD leader Daw Aung San Suu Kyi would continue to take the helm of the cabinet was also put to rest at the press conference with NLD vice chair and Mandalay Region Chief Minister Dr. Zaw Myint Maung telling reporters that she would serve a second term as de facto leader of the country with title of State Counselor.

She cannot assume the presidency under the terms of the military-drafted 2008 Constitution.
