More than 8,000 voters aged 60 and above lose their advance voting rights in Shan State

There are more than 8,000 people aged 60 and above in Mong Kung Township excluded from the list for the election, said U Htin Kyaw, Chair of the Shan State Election Sub-Commission.

There are more than 400,000 voters aged 60 and above in Shan State.

 Two members of the election commission, health staff and the relevant administrator will carry out the door-to-door collection of advance votes for the elderly who are unable to come to the polling stations due to health.

 Daw Yin Yin, a voter from the Kyaunggyisu ward in Taunggyi Township said: “the number of parties has increased. The voters have to wear facemasks and wash their hands.”

 U Aung Naing, Thittaw award administrator reported “Those aged 60 and above can cast their advance votes in person at the polling booths from 29th October to November 1st from 8 am to 6 pm. We are operating the polling process systematically and in accord with the health measures.”

There are over 3.5 million eligible voters in Shan State. Around 75,000 people were deprived of their voting rights due to the cancellation of elections in eight townships including Mong Kung Township, according to the Shan State Election Sub-Commission Office.
