“The ethnic minority peoples have no trust in the NLD” according to Mon political analyst Naing Banyar Gagyawgi who considers the government has failed to deliver any benefits from the peace process.

The analyst expects to see the emergence of a coalition government which will be able to provide checks and balance after the 2020 General Election.

Naing Banyar Gagyawgi added “If a coalition is formed The National League for Democracy (NLD) will have to consider ethnic parties and the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP) and act with responsibility “

“In 2010 and 2015 General Elections, one dominant party formed the government. But they were unable to establish the peace and ethnic rights, “said Naing Aung Za Na, Chair of the Mon Writers’ Association.  The efforts to build a peaceful Union have not materialized yet. Ethnic parties need to consolidate and cooperate to bring about real change.

The ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) has said it has no plan to form a coalition government after the 2020 General Election.

Naing Aung Zana continued “if the ethnics cast their voters for their ethnic candidates, these states will have more representatives. They will perform more duties for the state and we will see progress.”

The Mon Unity Party will run for 35 out of 45 constituencies in Mon State while the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD), the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), the United Democratic Party (UDP) will compete in all constituencies.

A total of 302 candidates from 17 political parties and independent candidates have registered to run for the seats in the upcoming election scheduled for 8 November.
