Kayah State election sub-commission rejects USDP candidate

The Kayah State election sub-commission has rejected a candidate from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), said U Kyaw Hsan Win, an officer of the sub-commission officer on October 13.

The rejected candidate is U Hnin Wai who registered to run for the seat in Kayah State Constituency-2 in Maese Township in Kayah State. The commission rejected him according to Section 8 (b) of the State Election Commission.

Section 8 (b) requires “An applicant to be born of two parents who are citizens of Myanmar. Both his parents are Myanmar citizens. The commission rejected him as his mother’s second husband is a Chinese citizen.

Immigration Department sent a letter to the Union Election Commission about the breach of Section 8 (b) and 10 (c) of the State Parliamentary Election Law. That’s why the district election commission decided to remove his name from the candidate list.  

The rejected candidate competed in the 2010 and 2015 General Elections representing the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP). He won the upper house constituency-12 in Maesae Township in the 2010 General Election. But he did not win the victory in the 2015 General Election.

U Hnin Wai is the first-ever candidate in Kayah State whose application was rejected. U Hnin Wai commented “I will continue doing national politics though I have no chance to compete in the election.  I will make a response with a sense of the duty and rights of a citizen. and I will provide assistance to my party.”

He is one of the candidates among 272 candidates who have registered to run for the seats in the 2020 General Election in Kayah State.

The candidates from the Shan Nationalities League for Democracy (SNLD), the National Democratic Force Party, the Union Betterment Party (UBP), the United Democratic Party (UDP), the Kayah State Democratic Party and the National League for Democracy (NLD) will contest the election in State Constituency-2 in Maese Township in Kayah State.
