Kachin-based ethnic parties said they will make constructive discussions if the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) makes an offer to them.

U Kwan Gayaung Aung Kham, spokesperson of the Kachin State People’s Party said: “I have heard about talks with ethnic political parties. But there have been no official invitations until now. The party will hold discussions in a constructive manner if the NLD makes an invitation. We need to monitor what kind of talks the NLD will hold. I expect the NLD will implement it practically instead of just giving us lip service.”

Dr. Myo Nyunt told the media after the CEC meeting held on December 12th, “The NLD is planning to hold talks with ethnic political parties.”

At the CEC meeting, the NLD selected e Dr. Aung Moe Nyo, Daw Nan Khin Htwe Myint and U in Htone Khar Naw Sam as the leaders for the committee to discuss with ethnic political parties.

U Shwe Min, Chair of the Lisu National Development Party (Dulay Party) said: “The party will hold discussions on the political path. The party will hold constructive discussions. Our discussion will place emphasis mainly on ethnic equality and the federal system.

On 12 November, the NLD sent an open letter to 48 political parties, saying that the NLD would make constant efforts to ensure the emergence of a democratic federal union.

U Thein Saung, Chair of the New Democracy Party (Kachin) said: “First, we have to listen to what the NLD is seeking from the dialogue. We will meet them in a constructive manner. Over the recent days, the NLD sent a letter. We want to prioritize the federal. We need to wait for how the NLD will hold discussions.”

The NLD can form the government for the second time as it secured 920 of 1,117 constituencies in the 2020 General Elections.
