First regular session of third Karen State Parliament kicks off on 9 Feb

The first regular session of third Karen State Parliament will convene at 10 am on the morning of 9th February, according to a statement by the  Karen State Parliament on January 19th.

Elected MP Saw Khayit to Phar from Thantaunggyi Township Constituency-1 said: “I have received the letter to attend the Karen State parliament via online. I will conduct the COVID-19 test in Thandaunggyi Township before going to Hpa-An Township.”

In the 2020 General Elections, the NLD secured 11 seats for the Karen State parliament, the USDP, two seats and Karen People’s Party, one seat. The NLD also won the seats for Bamar and Pa-O ethnic affairs ministers while the Mon Unity Party (MUP) secured one seat for Mon ethnic affairs minister.

As the NLD won the majority seats in Karen State parliament, the NLD can appoint the speaker and deputy speakers of Karen State parliament.

There are 23 MPs in the second Karen State parliament—13 from the NLD, six military MPs, three from the USDP and one from the Kayin People’s Party.

There are 30 seats in Karen State— six of seven lower house seats, 11 of 12 upper house seats, 11 of 14 Karean State Parliament and two of three for ethnic affairs.
