The number of eligible voters for 2020 General Elections, has increased by around 70,000, compared to the figures in 2015, said U Lin Kyaw, officer of Chin State Election Sub-Commission.

According to the figures released by the commission for the first time, the total number of eligible voters in Chin State exceeds 340,000. In the 2015 General Elections, there were more than 270,000 eligible voters. At present, more than 20,000 people living overseas plan to go home,” U Lin Kyaw added.

On 25 July, the UEC released the lists of voters. The relevant election sub-commissions are working on the accuracy of voters lists. Currently, the sub-commission releases the approximate number of eligible voters, said U Lin Kyaw.

“Thanks to the increase in the number of voters, candidates need to get more votes than those in the previous elections. For instance, if a candidate secured a seat by 8,000 votes, he or she needs to get around 15,000 votes in the upcoming election,” said U Chan Htan Ouke, a candidate from Chin National League for Democracy in Falam Township.

There are 39 constituencies in nine townships of Chin State—nine for lower house parliament, 12 for upper house and 18 for Chin State parliament. A total of 211 candidates have registered to run for the seats there.

The Union Election Commission (UEC) announced on 1 July that the General Election is slated for 8 November for 330 constituencies for lower house, 168 for upper house, 644 for region and state constituencies and 29 for ethnic affairs constituencies.
