Members of the Democratic Party of National Politics (DNP) and locals held a protest against the Union Election Commission (UEC) in front of Shan State Election Sub-Commission Office in Taunggyi Township on November 17, citing that the election is unfair.

U Win Bo, Secretary of the DNP in Shan State said: “The UEC had some errors in the election in Shan State. I myself ran for the seat in the election as a candidate. I got checked like the checking of overnight guests at the polling station. The people aged 20 and 30 cast advance votes in place of the elderly at Ward No.10 in Taunggyi Township. There were no problems in the elections in 2010 and 2015 as the UEC’s undertakings were fair.”

The DNP members and around 18 Pa-O ethnic people from Satthay and Chosi villages in Yatsauk Township, participated in the protest.

U Tun Tet, a Pa-O ethnic from Satthay-Chosi village said: “I arrived here as some people told me to go to Taunggyi. They did not say what to do before.”

The protestors arrived in Taunggyi at around 12.30 via Ayethaya. They protested against the UEC, holding the vinyl signboards reading “Don’t want the unfair UEC” and “Don’t want the government which does vote rigging and voter’s theft.”

A total of 29 persons participated in the protest.
