Detainees can freely cast their votes: Arakan State Election Sub-Commission

The Arakan State Election Sub-Commission has directed relevant prison officers to ensure that detainees can cast their votes in the upcoming election slated for November 8.

U Thurein Htut, Secretary of the Arakan State Election Sub-Commission said: “There are 284 detainees who are eligible to cast their votes for the 2020 General Election, in Arakan State.”

 “The election sub-commission will open polling booths for detainees. They can freely cast their votes. The election sub-commission has already instructed them how to manage it,” he added.

There are 62 detainees who have voting rights in Sittwe, 28 in MraukU, 14 in Myaebon, 63 in Kyaukphyu, 29 in Thandwe, 18 in Maungdaw and some in other townships, according to the Arakan State Election Sub-Commission.

According to the lists of voters released for the second time, there are more than 1,647,000 voters and 2,596 polling stations in Arakan State.
