Check and balance system will be better in the Mon State parliament according to Dr. Aung Naing Oo, a MP elected from the Mon Unity Party (MUP).

In the 2020 General Elections, the MUP secured six seats in Mon State parliament and the ruling National League for Democracy (NLD) 17 seats.

Dr. Aung Naing Oo who secured the seat in Chaungsone Township Constituency said: “In 2010, two MPs from the Mon party were included in the government. In 2015 only one MP was included in the cabinet.

The party pays more attention to strengthening the parliament, rather than forming a government. The party aims to ensure a better parliament which can control any government.”

In 2018 the MUP was formed from a merger of the All Mon Region Democracy Party and the Mon National Party. In the 2020 General Elections, the MUP competed for 67 seats—35 in Mon State, six in Yangon, two in Bago, 12 in Tanintharyi and 12 in the Karen State.

The MUP secured 12 seats in the election—two for the lower house, three for upper house, six for Mon State parliament and one for ethnic affairs minister, according to the statement by the UEC.

In the 2015 General Election the two parties secured only four seats. The MUP secured 12 seats in the 2020 General Elections.

Now There will be checks and balance in parliament, said General Secretary of the MUP Naing Laeyi Tama who secured Thanphyuzayat Township Constituency-

The MUP secured six seats for Mon State parliament in six townships of Mawlamyine District and six seats in the Upper House, Lower House and Mon State parliamentary constituency-1 and 2 in Yay Township.
