The election sub-commission has recently rejected another Muslim candidate in Arakan State. The rejected Muslim candidate is U Aye Win who registered to run for the lower house parliament as a candidate for the Democracy and Human Rights Party (DHRP) in Maungdaw Township.

The commission did not reject the candidate during the scrutiny of candidates. He was rejected only on October 1 after the scrutinizing process.

There are six Muslim candidates who have submitted their candidate applications in Arakan State. The commission rejected all five Muslim candidates during the scrutinizing period. The commission again rejected U Aye Win.

According to UK-based Amnesty International, there is systematic racial discrimination against Muslim people in Myanmar.

U Kyaw Than, Secretary of the Maungdaw District Election Sub-Commission said: “The District Election sub-commission approved his candidate application as he can prove that his parents held National Registration Cards. The district sub-commission had sent the documents to the Union Election Commission. The UEC forwarded the documents to the relevant ministry for additional checking. According to the checks, his parents were not citizens at the time of his birth.

“The sub-commission informed me about the rejection made on October 1. The reason given for my rejection is nonsense. The pretext was that my parents were not citizens at the time of my birth. But at the time of my birth,my father served as the head of Maungdaw police station. birth. It cannot be said that the person who has been serving as the head of the police station is not a citizen of Myanmar,” U Aye Win complained.

U Aye Win said he will make an appeal to the Union Election Commission (UEC) about the rejection. The commission has rejected all Muslim candidates under the pretext that their parents are not citizens.

UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in Myanmar, Thomas Andrews in his report to the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva has said Muslim people have been disenfranchised for political reasons.
