Only 90 percent of the candidates who competed in the 2020 General Elections have submitted their election expenses before the deadline, in Mohnyin District of Kachin State, said U Myo Min Oo, the election officer of the Mohnyin District Election Sub-Commission.

Of three townships in Mohnyin District, all candidates from Mohnyin Township have already submitted their election expenses. Not all candidates from Moegaung and Hpakant Townships have submitted their election expenses yet. Due to the pandemic, there is no easy access to Hpakant Township. All candidates are responsible to present their election expenses during the designated period according to Section 77 of the Election Bylaw, he added.

The deadline for the submission of the election expenses is December 13. About 60 of 76 candidates in Mohnyin District have already submitted their election expenses, so far.

“I think it will be completed in one or two days. The election expenses submitted by some candidates did not exceed the amounts permitted. But some are not in accord with the bylaws. For instance, there is a missing cash account. We have to correct it. Some candidates are unable to submit it as they cannot take oaths at the courts due to the holidays.

In Mohnyin District, 84 candidates competed in the 2015 General Elections. All candidates submitted their election expenses, according to the District Election Sub-Commission.

“Candidates are to present their election expenses to the respective districts on December 13. Those who fail to submit it before the deadline shall be declared the “disqualified” Tun Aung Khaing, an officer of Kachin State Election Sub-Commission.
