There are 140 polling stations for the voters with disabilities in Mohnyin District in Kachin State according to the District Election Sub-Commission out of a total of 280 polling stations in this Kachin district.

The election sub-commission will conduct the course for the polling station officers, in order to help voters with disabilities cast their votes without any problems.

U Myo Min Oo, an officer of Mohnyin District Election Sub-Commission said: “Some polling stations have one or two voters with disabilities. The number of disabled voters is scattered. At the end of this month, we plan to conduct courses for the polling station officers to ensure the smooth operations of voting by disabled persons.

“The government has allotted a budget for an educational course on the voting of people with disabilities in the upcoming election.  The training courses are being conducted in Kachin State in cooperation with the civil societies and the government bodies. We have received a directive from the Myanmar Disabled Federation to start this course. But the COVID-19 restrictions on mass meetings pose a problem. Currently, we plan to open the course in Bhamo Township. We also plan to open the course in Mohnyin District soon,” said U Zone Yaw, Chair of the Association for the Disabled in Kachin State.

The training course is the first of its kind.

In the previous elections, there were no such training courses. The election sub-commission compiled the list of voters, by classifying the voters with disabilities into three groups—those who use wheelchairs and crutches and those with other disabilities.

There are 237 voters with disabilities in Mohnyin Township, 105 in Moegaung Township and 142 in Hpakant Township, according to the Mohnyin District Election Sub-Commission.

There are 416,705 voters in Mohnyin District in the 2020 General Election. In the 2015 General Election, there were 265,191 voters and 249 polling stations.

A total of 89 candidates from 12 political parties have registered to run for the seats in Mohnyin District.

There are more than 8,000 voters with disabilities in Kachin State.
