An alleged incident of Ward and Village Election Commission officials being driven from a polling station on Election Day by the administrator for Ye Township’s Hangan Village in northern Mon State was reported to the police by the Mon National Party (MNP). MNP candidates Naing Sein Mya Aung, Naing Kan Linn, and Naing Aung Htay filed the case against the village administrator after reporting it to the Union Election Commission (UEC).
“We first reported this to UEC. They informed us that the case was under the police’s authority,” Naing Yan Linn Aung said.
A criminal investigation into the matter has been started.
Although other cases have been reported in Mon State during the election period, most were resolved after the concerned parties met with a negotiation committee. Only the Ye Township incident has been reported to police, according to U Hein Linn Htet, a Mon State election sub-commission officer.
“The incident from Ye is a little unusual. The administrator has already apologized. The (Ward and Village) official is satisfied, but the MNP reported the case (to the police),” he said.
The election law states that any complaints regarding alleged offences can be filed before Election Day or 15 days after providing there is sufficient proof. If found guilty, prison sentences of one-year or a fine of 100,000 kyats; or both, will be applied.
