Aik Sai — Less than half of those registered bothered to vote in the recent election in Mudon and Kyaikmaraw townships in Mon State.
Among 165,376 eligible voters in Mudon Township, only 76,836 people cast ballots in 102 polling stations in 42 village tracts.
The same low figures were recorded in Kyaikmaraw Township with just over 60,000 out of over 150,000 eligible voters taking part, according to Kyaikmaraw Township Election Sub-Commission office. Ninety-nine polling stations were opened in the township.
“The percentage of voters is only forty-three percent, fifty-seven percent didn’t vote,” said U Than Tun Aung from the Kyaikmaraw Township Election Sub-Commission.
In Mudon Township candidates from the Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), the Mon National Party (MNP), the All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMRDP), the National League for Democracy (NLD), the National Unity Party, and the National Democratic Force (NDF) contested seats.
U Saw Tun, U Wai Tin, and Daw Myat Theingi Maw from the NLD each won a seat in the Lower House, the Upper House, and State Parliament Constituency No 1 while Dr. Min Kyi Win from the MNP won a seat in the State Parliament Constituency No 2.
In Kyaikmaraw Township 99 polling stations were opened. Candidates from the NLD, the USDP, the MNP, AMRDP, the 88 Generation Student Youths, the Women’s Party (Mon), the Phalon-Sawwaw Democratic Party, the NUP, and independent candidates ran.
U Saw Kyaw Win Maung, U Khin Zaw Oo, and Daw Khin Myo Myint from the NLD won seats in the Lower House, the Upper House, and State Parliament Constituency No 1, respectively and U Min Aung Mon from the USDP won a seat in the State Parliament Constituency No 2.
Only 51.3 percent of registered voters in the whole Mon State cast ballot. The NLD won the majority of the seats, the MNP won three seats, the AMRDP won one seat, and USDP one seat.
