Aik Sai — Out of the 208 candidates in Mon State that contested the national election in Myanmar, 115 will be returned the 300,000 kyats (US$233) they submitted to run, according to information obtained by the state election sub-commission office. Election bylaws allow candidates that received at least one-eighth of the ballots to get their deposits back.
“If a candidate has received 12.5 percent of valid votes, 300,000 kyats will be reimbursed to the candidate. We have submitted this (those that qualify) to the Union Election Commission,” said U Hein Linn Htet, an election officer for the state election sub-commission office.
The recent polls were contested by a diverse range of parties including the National League for Democracy (NLD); Mon National Party (MNP); All Mon Region Democracy Party (AMRDP); Women’s Party (Mon); the Union Solidarity and Development Party and independent candidates.
