Aik Sai — Mon State currently has over 1.5 million registered voters for the 2015 General Election; over 500,000 more than in 2010 when the last election took place.
“We collected the voter list according to the law and the number of eligible voters increased. They are migrant residents that have lived over 180 days in their residencies and applied to be included under the Form 3A,” said U Hein Linn Htet, an election officer for Mon State Election Sub-Commission office.
The form was designed to assist migrant workers not included on the voting list by allowing anyone that has lived in their ward for more than 180 days to vote if they obtain a letter of reference from their ward official.
By the September deadline after migrant workers names were added to the list, there were 1.47 million registered voters. There were 1.016 million registered voters in all of Mon State in 2010.
There are 919 polling stations in Mon State, including over 400 polling stations on military regiment bases to make it convenient for military personnel to vote.
According to the recent census, Mon State has a population of 2,050,281. Out of this, 500,000 people are under the age of 15.
