Khine Nwe Oo — The Dawei Nationalities Party (DNP) aims to win the Dawei constituency in Tanintharyi Region and will support the National League for Democracy (NLD) in order to bring about a new government that will actually make change, says the party’s Secretary Daw Nwe Ni Thein.

The DNP has been supporting the NLD as the current government has failed to make significant changes and carry out regional peace during its term, Daw Nwe Ni Thein said.

“We want to win in the regional parliament. We will support the NLD to bring about a democratic government. They will be able to make some changes,” said Daw Nwe Ni Thein.

The NLD will run in four townships in Tanintharyi Region and has not faced any difficulties in campaigning so far. However there are still concerns that voters are not able to vote at their polling stations and those that are located far away says U Khin Maung Aye, a candidate running for the state parliament in Dawei.

“We believe there is nearly a 100 percent chance in winning. If we win, we will prioritize regional development,” said U Khin Maung Aye, adding that there is little chances of conflict will other opposition parties.

“There won’t be voting disruption. All are democrats. We want a ceasefire,” said Daw Nwe Ni Win, adding that she wants real change even though she does not believe the election will be free and fair.

The Tanintharyi Region was once considered a conflict zone largely off limits because the Karen National Union (KNU) and the New Mon State Part (NMSP) controlled much of the area. Though the area has opened up in recent years armed groups still control parts of the Tanintharyi to Dawei Road.

Five parties will run in Dawei in the upcoming election, namely the National Unity Party, the Dawei Nationalities Party, the Union Solidarity and Development Party, the National Democratic Force and the National League for Democracy.
